What is Consensus?
Consensus is one of the largest annual events in the crypto calendar. Organized by crypto news site, CoinDesk, the event is billed as “the world’s longest running and most influential gathering” of the crypto community.
Its expressed purpose is to bring “the crypto and Web3 community together face-to-face for important conversations.”
Now in its eight year, this year’s three-day event is being held in Austin, Texas, and is expected to attract thousands of players from the crypto industry.
Who participates and what do they do?
Reportedly, more than 20,000 people from 112 different countries attended Consensus 2022. Typically, the event attracts creators, developers, policymakers, academics and executives.
There are a host of activities over the three days, including a daily summit, keynote addresses, panels, townhall events, networking opportunities, and new this year, invitation-only workshops and the Protocol Village, where chains and builders showcase their work.
What will they be talking about?
The event’s focus is being described as a time to reflect, rebuild and remember why we’re here, following a tumultuous few months for the sector. More specifically, three major themes will be covered during the course of the event: policy and regulation, Web3 brand and creators, and the future of money.
In addition, there will be 11 broad issues on the agenda, including making good on crypto’s early promise of individual empowerment, social inclusion, and protecting user privacy while meeting the goals of law enforcement and regulators.
The overall message is expected to be one recognizing that disturbing headlines aside, it’s a sector where innovation continues, and if anything, is accelerating.
Who is speaking?
Hundreds of speakers are featured in the program, including a range of industry figureheads, government figures, as well as several more widely known names, such as actor William Shatner, former – and very shortlived – White House communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, and whistleblowers Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden.
Among the US government representatives are Christy Goldsmith Romero, Commissioner of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Congressman Patrick McHenry, Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Julie Foerster, Project Director, Digital Assets at the IRS, and Senator Cynthia Lummis. There are a large number of industry CEOs, including Circle’s Jeremy Allaire, Daniel Alegre of Yuga Labs, Jenny Johnson of Franklin Templeton, and PROOF’s Kevin Rose. Speaking alongside them will be Oana Ruxandra, Chief Digital Officer and EVP, Business Development, for Warner Music Group, Richard Widmann, Head of Strategy, Web3 at Google, and David Maisel, Founding Chairman of Marvel Studios and Mythos Studios.
